How to Calculate Fuel Required for a Distance

If you know exactly how far you are traveling, calculating the precise amount of fuel you need is simple mathematics. The formula relies on your vehicle's fuel efficiency (mileage):

Fuel Required (Liters) = Target Distance (km) ÷ Vehicle Mileage (km/l)

For example, if you are planning a trip to a hill station that is 320 kilometers away, and your SUV delivers a highway mileage of 12 km/l:

Once you know you strictly need 26.6 liters to complete the journey, you can cross-reference this with your car's fuel tank capacity. If your car has a 45-liter tank, you can comfortably complete a one-way trip on a full tank. However, you will definitely need to refuel before making the return journey.

Understanding Vehicle Range

The inverse of the calculation above is figuring out your Maximum Range. Range is defined as the absolute maximum distance your car can travel before the engine shuts off due to fuel starvation. The formula for this is:

Maximum Range (km) = Available Fuel (Liters) × Vehicle Mileage (km/l)

If you look at your fuel gauge and estimate you have a quarter-tank left (roughly 10 liters in a standard hatchback), and your car gives 15 km/l, your maximum range is strictly 150 kilometers. If your destination is 180 km away, our calculator will immediately alert you to a Fuel Deficit, meaning you must stop at a petrol pump immediately.

The Danger of the "Low Fuel" Warning Light

Modern cars feature a low fuel warning light, accompanied by a "Distance to Empty" (DTE) readout on the digital dashboard. While incredibly helpful, you should never blindly trust the DTE number when pushing your car's limits.

The DTE is calculated dynamically based on your driving habits over the last few kilometers. If you were cruising down a highway at 80 km/h, the DTE might show 70 km remaining. However, if you suddenly exit the highway and enter heavy, stop-and-go city traffic or begin climbing a steep hill, your mileage will plummet. That 70 km DTE can instantly drop to 30 km, leaving you stranded. Always use our calculator with a conservative mileage estimate to build a safety buffer.
